Weekend Review: Memorial Day

Husband's aunt Debbie lives in the mountains and her house was on our list of places to visit this year. Memorial Day weekend seemed like the perfect time. So we took Friday off and hit the road (with Husband's mom and step dad in the car behind us - Grant was in Heaven!).

Its roughly a 4 hour drive and Grant did really well (anything is better than a 14 hour drive to see my family!). He was ready to play as soon as he got out of the car - and stayed that way all weekend.

Baseball in the backing yard - immediately after getting out of the car.
Grant loves spending time with aunt Debbie and he helped her feed the birds one morning:

After the birds came to scarf up the food, Grant could be found with his face pressed against the living room windows watching. Informing us of what birds were doing what and where. He loved it :)

He helped with the dishes too:

I love this one!
Debbie has a fenced in backyard so the backdoor was open a lot with Grant running in and out of the house. We tried to keep the toys we brought on the back porch and Grant could play when he wanted to (when doesn't he want to?). He loved the constant playtime, especially playing baseball, and wore his new hat a lot:

It's one of his new favorite things.
I got to play with my camera a bit and took pictures of Debbie's pretty wild roses. I think I need to figure out how to grow roses at my house. I love them!

My in-law's dog, Truffles, came too. She's so cute that I have to share a picture of her too:

The weekend went by fast (as they always do) and we had to get back to normal. We left Monday after a yummy breakfast and on the way home hit a rest stop where Grant and Gramma spotted a butterfly. Things like that excite Grant and we realized when we got closer...and it didn't move...that maybe it was hurt. So Husband picked it up carefully so Grant could get a close up and then put it down out of the way so it hopefully wouldn't get trampled.

I'm not the biggest butterfly fan, but it was pretty!
The weather was perfect and we had such a good time hanging out with family and doing some site-seeing. It was a great weekend, hopefully we'll do it again!

Weekend Review

It was just a good weekend. It was the kind of weekend that when someone asks how my weekend was, I don't feel compelled to say it was too short. Because it was good and enjoyable and sunny and happy.

Cheesy, huh? I don't care. It was a good weekend and we've needed one of those lately.

I'm not a person to hate winter. Actually, I'm usually a summer-hater. But I didn't realize until this sunny, great weekend just how tired I was of cold weather.

Saturday morning we had plans to meet Husband's family for breakfast. The promise of Gramma, Grandpa, Aunt Debbie, and pancakes on Saturday morning is the perfect start for Grant. We had to make a quick stop for some cake supplies I needed and Grant found some treasures of his own there:

Grave Digger and Lightning McQueen rings.
Then on to breakfast and some unsuccessful but not unenjoyable shopping (I did score some cheap ties for a sewing project I need to make time for).

After all that, we stopped off at Lake Wheeler Park to see some ducks, play on the playground and just walk around on a sunny day.

Family picture!

Grant and I shared a snow cone! A yummy treat!

Checking out the boats and the ducks
We hadn't been out to Lake Wheeler in a while and I had no idea how nice it is out there. We're definitely doing a picnic there soon.

Since we had a late breakfast/early lunch we ate an early dinner and then had family movie night! Redbox was out of the good stuff so we watched Finding Nemo (which we already had but Grant hasn't watched). I made a big batch of popcorn on the stove and we lounged on the floor with just about every blanket and pillow we own. It was great :)

Sunday was kind of lazy. I cooked breakfast and we hung around the house so Grant could take a good nap (Saturday's nap was brief and in the car). Then Grant and I went shopping for some spring clothes and Husband ran some other errands. He surprised me with some new chairs for the deck and a little one for Grant too...so we ate our dinner outside last night - something we've never done in all our years of having a deck. I really don't think we could have ended the weekend any better.

I hope everyone's weekend was as good as ours!

Labor Day Weekend Review

Saturday was great. Grant helped me run errands (having him with me while doing returns in a very crowded mall kept my temper in check) and then we rewarded ourselves with some yummy frozen custard.

It was downhill from there. After we got home he seemed fussy and lazy (very un-Grant). Husband took his temp and he had a slight fever. I figured he was teething or had a cold. However, since he was bitten by mosquitoes the previous week, Husband went into panic mode "OH MY GOD HE HAS WEST NILE!!!!"

Fast forward to bed time. My bedtime. Grant was sound asleep, Husband was snoring away in the bedroom (very loudly so I had planted myself on the couch), and I had just turned off my kindle and was ready for sleep too at 11:00 p.m. on the dot. Grant chose that moment to start screaming. Not the "I woke up and I want someone to come in here so I know it's ok to go back to sleep" cry but real screaming. I knew he hadn't fallen out of the crib because it wasn't preceded by a thud. I go in, pick him up and try to calm him. I stand him on the changing table to check him out, he reaches for me, gags and vomits all over. Then, of course, he wants a hug. Vomits again. Tries to hug it out. Vomits again. Husband comes in "OH MY GOD HE'S THROWING UP! WHAT DO WE DO?" I have said in the past, and he agrees, I handle this stuff much better than Husband.

So we get Grant calmed down, almost asleep even, after a change of clothes. We figure the worst is over but have to get the 103.3 temp down. We gave him Tylenol...and there we go again with vomiting and hugging. I smelled great. Husband: "WHAT DO WE DO IF HE CAN'T TAKE MEDICINE?" I'm not exaggerating his panic in the least, by the way. And there was a lot of it. I tell him to run a cool bath. A) It helps and B) Grant is wearing his last 3 meals. "ARE YOU SURE THAT'S WHAT TO DO?" Let me tell you, between taking care of Grant and dealing with my deranged husband, I felt like Supermom that night. But it all worked out and we all managed to find sleep around 2 a.m.

The rest of the weekend consisted of laying around in PJ's and watching more Thomas the Train  and Monster Jam than anyone should ever be subjected to. Slight relapse of fever but otherwise just fine.

I wouldn't let Grant play outside so he sat at the door and
watched Daddy mow the lawn. He loves the "tractor".

"Oh...someday I'll drive a tractor"
On Tuesday everyone went to their intended destinations. But when Husband went to pick up Grant in the afternoon they said he clearly wasn't feeling well. At one point having a crying spell that no one could calm and he eventually took a nap (at 4:30 which is very unusual). He came home and guess what? Threw up. So I kept him home yesterday for a doctor's appointment. She looked him over and when she got to his throat said "There's where that fever is coming from. His throat is really swollen. We'll do a strep test but he's really too young for that. It's probably viral." So we waited for the test results. She came back 15-20 minutes later with a weird look on her face. "OMG ITS WEST NILE Well, it's strep. It's strange, we don't generally see that in someone his age." So he's on antibiotics for a bit. Now we just need to keep our fingers crossed that we don't get it!

Oh yeah, we also converted the crib Monday:

Big guy bed!
But that's a whole other post.
